What is Music Therapy?
“Music therapy is a discipline in which Certified Music Therapists (MTAs) use music purposefully within therapeutic relationships to support development, health, and well-being. Music therapists use music safely and ethically to address human needs within cognitive, communicative, emotional, musical, physical, social, and spiritual domains.”
Canadian Association of Music Therapists, September 2020.
At North Music Therapy, we like to think of music therapy as a way of harnessing the power of music to facilitate healing, promote overall well-being, and reach musical or non-musical goals. It utilizes music-based interventions to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. These could include communication, motor, or social skills. Music therapy incorporates a wide range of musical elements, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and lyrics, to create meaningful and therapeutic experiences.
